Goodbye Argentina

Spent most of the day touring the countryside and visiting a winery. I kept telling the boys from Belatrix that we have wineries in BC. But they were convinced that Mendoza is the only place in the world with wineries so they just had to show me one.

On the plus side, I also saw a little bit of the Argentine countryside .. and that was special. I have put together a few pictures and words (and a little Argentine music). Click on the video links below:

A few views of Mendoza - including the tradition of drinking Mate (pron: Ma-Teh).

Goodbye Argentina. A visit to a winery in the country.

Hello Chile

Had another Spanish-Speaking incident today. The zipper on my only pair of pants broke. The first 3 people I asked about it at the hotel didn't speak English. So, with the fourth person I tried Spanish: Pointing to my zipper and saying "roto" (broken).

I only realized after the funny smile she gave me just what I was doing: pointing at my private parts and saying broken.
(every seen an Iranian turn red?)

Thank goodnees she spoke English and I had the opportunity to explain myself. :-)

Hotel couldn't help me, and I really can't wear my skull-and-crossbones boxers at tomorrow's meeting. So I spent about an hour in the local mall tracking down a replacement zipper and finding a way to purchase it. When I'm done with this email I'll be googling instructions on zipper replacement.

When I was in Santiago a few days ago I stayed at the airport (the Holiday Inn). Tonight I am downtown (at the Marriott). I find Santiago to be a completely unremarkable city. It's just a modern busy metropolis. No character, nothing about it with Spanish or colonial feel, nothing to say that I am not in Toronto or Seattle or Houston. And the people here are not friendly like they have been everywhere else on this trip.

It's late and I still haven't started on my zipper project. I better get on with it.
