Aircraft Motions

There are 3 possible motions than at aircraft can experience in flight. There are specific aviation terms for them which you will need to know. Later, in class, we will talk about how the pilot (or co-pilot) can use the aicraft's controls to create these 3 motions.

Roll
The first basic motion is called Roll. In this motion, one wing moves downward while the other moves up. You probably associate this motion with a turning airplane.

Pitch
The next basic motion is called Pitch. In this motion, the nose of the aircraft moves up or down. You probably associate this motion with an aircraft climbing or decending.

Yaw
Our last basic motion is called Yaw. In this motion, the nose of the aircraft moves left or right. In a car, this motion is often called 'Fish Tailing'. This is not a motion you are probably use to experiencing in an aircraft.

Aicraft have specific controls in the cockpit for each of these motions.
